Arkansas River below Pueblo Dam
Sept 7, 2010
Flow below Pueblo Dam: 416 cfs
Water Temp: 68F from the dam
Water Clarity: Slightly stained with 3' of visibility
Weather: High of 82F, mostly sunny
Fishing Report:
We are now in that late summer period were water temps from the dam are at a seasonal high between 68 - 70 degrees farenheit. This means water temps are climbing into the low 70's the further east you go from the dam. While fishing remains quite productive there are a few things to keep in mind until we start to see water temps dip back down into the low 60's. First of all, fishing the morning hours to about 1:00pm will be most productive as water temps are at a daily low. Also, if you are planning on fishing in the afternoon and evening we recommend you focus on the first mile or two below the dam. For the next few weeks it is especially important that you play fish quickly and keep them in the water while you remove the hook and prepare for the release. By mid September we should start to see water temps drop back down into the low 60's and fishing will then be more consistent throughout the day.
with that said, there has been a noticable improvement in water clarity over the past two weeks and this has lead to more surface feeding. Try your favorite hopper pattern or large attractor and drop a smaller dry off the back, or a bead head nymph if you prefer. However, if you are looking to maximize the number of hook ups, sticking with a two or three fly nymph rig is still the best bet. As far as fly selection goes, bead head patterns sz 12 - 16, like the psycho prince, hare's ear and copper john, are working well. Trailing a small beatis nymph sz 16 - 20 is also a good idea. Overall, you can expect good fishing for the next 8 - 10 weeks with flows typically ranging from 200 - 600 cfs. The water will remain stained until turnover occurs, usually sometime in October, with visibility ranging from 1 - 3'. Come mid November the flows will be reduced for winter water storage and the BWO's will be hatching in ernest. This makes for some of the best dry fly fishing of the year on this section.
We had a great guide season last winter with most clients catching good numbers of fish in the 10 - 16" range and in most instances, at least one fish over 16" each outing. As this relatively new fishery continues to improve we expect to see an increase in demand for guided trips so don't wait to make your reservation.
The Res Report:
Fishing for bass and wiper has improved recently with the peak fishing still occuring around dawn and dusk. As we move into September, look for fishing to improve into late morning and pick up again by late afternoon. September and October are prime months for target trophey wiper, bass and walleye. Focusing on mid depth structure and locating shad schools will be the key to success.
