There is no better way to learn to fly fish than with a professional instructor at your side. We have intensive one-day and two-day schools, individualized classes, and our Fly Fishing 101 program provides an excellent and affordable overview and introduction. Got a group? Fly Fishing School ArkAnglers ColoradoThe ArkAnglers Flyfishing Schools have evolved from the Columbine School of Flyfishing established in the mid-1960's by Paul Fling and Don Puterbaugh, Colorado's first and longest-running instructional program. These schools are a great value for those who want to make their first steps into the river as productive and educational as possible. All equipment, flies, terminal tackle, waders, lunch and guiding are included. Schools are scheduled in both Pueblo and Salida on specific weekends throughout the year, or get a group of four or more people together and we can provide this experience on the date of your choice.

One Day School
Spend the morning learning the basics of flyfishing, including casting, tying knots, identifying insects, selecting fly patterns, equipment set-up and more. After lunch, hit the river in a 2:1 guest to guide tutorial setting where we put into action the skills learned in the morning. Meets at 8:00 am, runs till 5:00 pm. The schools are held on the Saturdays below, or by request for groups of four or more.

Fly Fishing School custom group ColoradoSpecial: Introductory Clinic
This learning option offers only the classroom and casting portions of our regular 1-day school, above. It does not include the guided on-water session. Learn all those details you wish you would have known before. This clinic also makes a great gift for an aspiring flyfisher. All materials and equipment are provided, or bring your own.
Sign up for either the morning portion of any of our regularly scheduled schools, for one of the clinic-only dates as listed below, or by request for groups of four or more.
Course Fee $99/student
(Lunch optional for school dates only for additional $8; request at time of reservation.)

Two Day School
For an expanded learning experience, add a second day to any of our scheduled school dates. Take the regular one-day class. On the second day, we start with a review casting clinic and then spend the morning on either a float or a wade trip, enjoying the other option in the afternoon. This course offers a great introduction to flyfishing as well as the opportunity to demo various fly rod models and equipment. Meets at 8:00 each day.
Total 2-day fee: $350/pp based on double occupancy.


Fly Fishing Schools Schedule - 2010

   

Salida School
Meet at the Arkansas River Fly Shop in Salida. The classroom portion of the course is taught at the ArkAnglers facility in Wellsville and the guided portion of the course is conducted on private water on the Arkansas River in the Wellsville area.

Pueblo School
Classes are taught at the Pueblo ArkAnglers shop with the guided portion of the trip conducted on the Pueblo tailwater section of the Arkansas River.

Flyfishing 101

This is an exploratory course in fly fishing. The morning is spent in the classroom with presentations on selection and rigging of equipment, aquatic insects and their imitations, and trout behavior. Following a casting clinic and lunch (please bring your own), the class will adjourn to the river for demonstrations on reading the water, line management, and fly presentation. The course fee is $100/person. Participants will receive a gift certificate good for $100 in retail merchandise at any ArkAnglers store (Salida, Buena Vista, Pueblo). Use of equipment is also included.

Fly Tying Classes in Pueblo


Don Puterbaugh Ties Fly COPYRIGHT 2009 ArkAnglers/NevilleClasses are from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The cost is $80 and includes all tools and materials for the duration of the class. Class participants receive 10% off all tying related purchases for a period of 30 days after completion. In addition, we offer a special student rate of $60 for the class. The student rate is available for elementary, high school and college students.

NOTE: Fly Tying Classes must be paid for in advance.

Special Learning Packages and Courses

One-Day Rowing Instructional
Join ArkAnglers for a day of intensive instruction – normally covering 15-20 miles of river. Starting in gentle, moving water, we progress to reading and scouting rapids, defensive boating, river dynamics, using eddies, ferrying techniques, and river safety. Our goal is to make anglers into safe boaters – people who know their abilities, know their limits, and who have the proper foundation so they can continue to improve their skills on their own. 1 Person: $300, 2 People: $375.

Five-day Intensive School
The goals of this introductory course are to impart a thorough understanding of river dynamics, reading water, and defensive boating. The course is supervised by Greg Felt with additional instruction provided by senior ArkAnglers rafting guides.
